1) BVM during Tracheal Intubation
Review Summary

Takeaway
BVM after induction and prior to intubation can help delay/prevent hypoxic events, another study with standardized pre-oxygenation techniques would be beneficial for overall usefulness.
2) Doppler vs. Manual Palpation of Pulse During Arrest
Review Summary
-
Source:
- Author: Meghan Breed
- Reviewer: Kelly Dubay, MD
Takeaway
Our fingers are terrible at finding a pulse. Doppler is great at finding any pulse (even non-perfusing). Peak systolic velocity correlates to blood pressure.
3) Diuretics vs. Fluids in Initial Management of High Risk PE
Review Summary
-
Source:
- Author: Alistair Brown
- Reviewer: Danielle Fearing, PA-C
Takeaway
Diuretic treatment in stable pts with intermediate to high risk PE results in faster decrease in BNP levels compared to volume expansion therapy.
4) Etomidate vs. Ketamine for Emergent Endotracheal Intubation
Review Summary
-
Source:
- Author: Matchett et al.
- Reviewer: Justin Groenewold, MD
Takeaway
A small mortality benefit can be seen at 7 days after use of ketamine versus etomidate, though the 28-day mortality is similar, and the study may have significant biases and may not be generalizable to our ED population.
5) Racial disparities in triage scores of pediatric patients with fever
Review Summary
-
Source:
- Authors: Alden Landry, Cherrelle Smith
- Reviewer: Jacy O'Keefe
Takeaway
Findings suggest racial disparities in the triage of NH Black pediatric patients older than 1 year for fever → racial disparities in triage scores suggest a need for further evaluation of the assignment of patient urgency in emergency medicine.
